The Essendon Cricket Club endured a difficult 2024-25 Premier Cricket season, finishing 17th with just one First XI victory. However, head coach Ben Fletcher remains optimistic, emphasising the club’s rebuilding efforts and the development of young players.

“It was a very good development year for us,” Fletcher said. “We knew what we were in for by way of rebuilding. Although it doesn’t show on the scoreboard, I thought it was positive, and we made some big steps. A lot of players are better than they were 12 months ago.”

Despite missing key recruits and struggling to find consistency, the club recorded an overall improvement across its four grades. Players such as Connor Poulton (438 runs) and Vihanga Fernando (265 runs) had breakthrough seasons, while Nick McGuane led the bowling attack with 19 wickets.

Fletcher also highlighted the progress of young talents like Luay Mraz, a promising 15-year-old fast bowler, and Jackson Martin, who made an impact in the Second XI. “We think Luay is a real talent, and we’ll back ourselves that he’ll be an Essendon player for a long time,” Fletcher added.

Looking ahead, the club plans to recruit key players to strengthen the squad but remains committed to fostering homegrown talent. “We are in the market to recruit, especially two First XI bowlers and two First XI batters,” Fletcher said. “But we’re not going to go super aggressive - we think our list is pretty talented.”

With improved player retention expected and a strong culture taking shape, Essendon is hopeful for a turnaround in the coming seasons. “The training standards, the coaching - it’s the best I’ve seen in 23 years of Premier Cricket,” Fletcher said.
