Round 16 Match Reports: A Tough Day at The Office

Staff Writer

1st XI

ECC 132 Lost to RCC 1-133

The 1st XI travelled down the highway to Col Wrigglesworth Oval in Sale to take on the top of the table Tigers. Losing the toss and being sent in the Bombers never really got going ultimately being bundled out for 132. An unbeaten 31 from 61 balls from Jarrod Parsons who continued his strong first season in Premier Cricket and a rear guard 20 off 52 from all-rounder Nick McGuane the only highlights in what was a disappointing start to the day.

With the ball in hand the Bombers struggled to make in-roads with the total reeled in in just 22.4 overs for the loss of only 1 wicket. Speedster Lachie Busk the sole wicket taker.

The 1sts now sit 16th on the ladder after Round 16.

2nd XI

RCC 285 DEF ECC 183

After a great win against Fitzroy in Round 15 the 2s were looking to continue their strong recent form against a strong Richmond Outfit. Losing the toss and bowling the Bombers struggled to make in-roads on a flat Windy Hill track.  Spinner Jacob Pawlowicz continued his recent outstanding form with a fine display of finger spin ultimately claiming 5/42 to keep the Bombers in the Game. On a good batting wicket the Bombers were able to restrict the Tigers to a gettable 286 to win.

Unfortunately it was a run chase that never really got going, early wickets and tight bowling left the Bombers at 4-61. 61 off 71 from skipper Liam Tobin and a handy contribution from Archit Bhatia (26 of 49) gave the Bombers a sniff however with a climbing run rate and wickets falling the total ultimately proved too far with the Bombers dismissed for 183 in the 48th over.

The loss leaves the Bombers sitting 14th on the ladder after 16 rounds.

Essendon Cricket Club Match Report

3rd XI

RCC 3-160 DEF ECC 158

The 3rds ventured out to Central Reserve to take on the Tigers in a big game to stay in touch with the 8. Batting first the 3rds scraped to 158 in a disappointing display. Skipper Paramvir Singh leading the way with 36.

Needing to bowl well to defend a smallish target the 3rds couldn’t get the early breakthroughs they needed and ultimately the Tigers chased down the 3 down in the 34th over. Spinner Krit Darji continued his good season with 2-25 from 9 overs.

The 3rds now sit 12th on the ladder after Round 16.

4th XI

RCC 7-356 DEF ECC 6-219

Bowling first on a great Cross Keys wicket the Bombers worked hard all morning against a very strong Richmond 4th XI outfit. In tough conditions for the bowlers the Tigers were able to post an imposing 7-356. Young seamers George Martindale and George Dikeos the pick off the bowlers, both continuing their strong respective seasons.

With a mammoth target ahead of them the 4ths gave as good as they got. Opening batsmen Stef James led the way with a classy 69 off 78 balls. James’ knock and a powerful 41 from 34 balls from skipper Krishna Chandak gave the Bombers hope however the big target ultimately proved a bridge too far with the 4s finishing 6-219 from their 45 overs.

The loss leaves the 4ths 18th on the ladder.

The Bombers now look ahead to this week’s games against old rival Kingston-Hawthorn Hawks. The 1sts will return to red ball cricket with a two day game (Saturday and Sunday) at Walter Galt Reserve.
