Round 16: Day 1 Report

It was a competitive day’s cricket across all four grades!

1st XI: ECC 172 v Footscray 0/7

It was an interesting day’s cricket at Windy Hill as the 1st XI were bundled out for 172. Sent in to bat by the Bulldogs, The Bombers lost early wickets to be two for twelve early however rallied to be in a strong position at 2/89. Opener Josh Trembearth continued his strong season compiling a well-made 47 whilst skipper Liam Molloy looked good for 41. The pair putting on 77 for the second wicket. Unfortunately though after this partnership was broken the Bombers fell away losing quick wickets and finding themselves 7/112. An eighth wicket stand of 56 between all rounders Ikroop Dhanoa (32) and Nick McGuane added some respectability to the score. McGuane in particular impressed with a gritty 23 from 117 balls in a knock that included 3 well struck boundaries. After this partnership was broken the Bulldogs cleaned up the last two wickets and the innings ended at 172. Number 11 Lachie Busk was unlucky to be stranded on 4* only 46 runs short of his maiden half century.

2nd XI: FCC 7/408

It was a tough day for the 2nd XI at Merv Hughes Oval in Footscray as the Footscray batting line up compiled a whopping 7/408. Winning the toss and bowling skipper Liam ‘Nasser’ Tobin was feeling the pressure early as the Bulldog’s top order went to work and finished the morning session at 3/127.

After lunch the Bomber’s toiled hard and fought back to 5/222. On debut Aaron ‘Sheik’ Cornish was brilliant, the off spinner showing great skill and guile to take 4/117 from 36 overs in a performance that UAE selectors will surely take note of. Despite never wilting in tough bowling conditions credit must be given to Footscray who batted brilliantly and the Bulldogs finished the day with a whopping 7/408.

The days play sets up an exciting run chase for the 2nd XI next Saturday.

3rd XI: FCC 241

The 3rd XI put in a strong performance at Cross Keys (SPW Oval) bowling out Footscray for 241 in 78.4 overs. After a strong opening stand of 79 it was skipper Paratrooper Singh who made the breakthrough via a well held catch by wicket keeper Maan Singh. From there it was a strong team bowling performance and the Bulldogs were bowled out for 241. Para was again the pick of the bowlers taking 3/27 from his 12 overs whilst spinner Heath Doherty chimed in with 2/23. First slipper Sean Phillips Williams also wanted it noted that he held two sharp chances in the slips, well done Sean.

The 3rds will be looking for a strong day with the bat next Saturday to chase down Footscray’s target. A win will just about secure a spot in the final so an exciting day awaits.

4th XI:  FCC 7/307

The 4th XI put in a shift down at Tony Dodemaide Oval restricting Footscray 7/307 in what were reported as brilliant batting conditions. Muhammad Abdul Wasay was the pick of the bowlers with 2/61 whilst skipper Prageeth Edirisinghe (bowling in long sleeves this week) put in a heroic effort sending down 24 overs and taking 1/75.

Footscray ending the days play at 7/307 and setting up an exciting days play next Saturday.

A win for the 4ths should also see them secure a top 8 spot and finals cricket.

Play will resume in all grades next Saturday at 10:30AM.
