Round 19 Match Reports: Good Day for The Bombers

Jaspar Wilson-Keir

1st XI GKCC 7-309 DREW ECC 0-92 (Rain Stopped Play)

It was a frustrating day for 1sts as rain curtailed a very promising start to the day.

After Greenvale’s declaration at 7-309 the opening pair of Fernando (51*) and Salvado (40*) started well. Amongst constant rain delays the boys progressed to a strong 0-92 before rain ultimately stopped play. Fernando registering his second 50 in the 1st XI to continue his strong season to date.

That aside it was a frustrating end to a day that promised so much the 1sts, forced to share a point a piece with local rivals the Kangaroos.

2nd XI GKCC 122 & 5-213 Defeated By ECC 3-125

After last week’s strong performance securing the win on day one the 2nds were looking to take advantage and seek maximum points. Declaring before play commenced with a lead of 3 the Bombers made early inroads reducing the Kangaroo’s 3-45 however a combination of rain delays, a wet ball and good Greenvale batting the momentum was halted and after lunch wickets became hard to come by for the Bombers. Amongst constant rain and poor conditions the Kangaroo’s limped to safety and avoided the chance of an outright victory for the 2nds.

Nevertheless it was a very commanding performance by the 2nds. Navdeep Rai again the pick of the Bowlers for the 2nds picking up 2/34 from 15.1 overs. Rai has enjoyed a breakout season and now has 23 wickets at 20.39 with a game to play.

3rd XI GKCC 286 Def ECC 210

It was a frustrating day for the 3rds dropping points in a game they would have expected to win. Resuming at 3-16 still 270 behind the chase was faltering at 5-55 however some excellent rear guard action from all rounders Arin Mishra (72) and Para Singh (62) combing for 121 run  8th wicket partnership gave the Bombers a sniff, ultimately the Kangaroos proved to good on the day and 3rds were bowled out for a disappointing 210.

The 3rds will now face off in a do or die final round must win showdown with Frankston for a spot in the finals.

4th XI ECC 148 & 2-69 Def GKCC 144

It was a great win the brave 4th XI winning in a nail biter by 1 wicket.

Resuming the day at 4-50 in reply to the Bombers 148 the Kangaroo’s were under early pressure after a Big Quick George Dikeos had an early wicket to reduce the Kangaroos to the 5/58. After some good batting the Kangaroos looked to be getting the momentum back at 5-109 however that was until captain Krishan Chandak put his stamp on the game. With appeals (and celebrations) so loud they effected inbound aero traffic at nearby Tullamarine the skipper produced a fine spell of 3/49 to bowl the Bombers to the brink of an inspiring victory. However with one wicket still required and only 4 runs to play with it was ice man George Martindale who produced a brute of a ball that was well held by Henry Robertson to win the game.

A great performance all round for the young 4ths.

Batting again The Bombers were solid in their second innings reaching 2-69 to snuff out any slim chance of a Greenvale comeback.

Overall it was a good day for the Bombers, securing points in 3 out of 4 grades.

Focus now turns to the Bombers last game of the season beginning next weekend, a Two Day fixture against Frankston CC. The 1sts will be at home at Windy Hill.
