The Young Guns Ready to Step Up and Lead Essendon’s Premier Cricket Rebuild

Essendon Cricket Club

Essendon’s Premier Cricket team is set for a rebuild this season, driven by a new generation of hungry, young players. After losing key figures like Farzan Chowna, Cam McClure, and club great Tom O'Donnell, the team will field its youngest-ever First XI without any state-capped players. Coach Ben Fletcher emphasised the importance of improvement and development, with a focus on fostering talent through an expanded coaching staff that includes former Victoria players and West Indian Test opener Omar Phillips.

New recruits include Englishman Harry Duke and St Kilda’s Josh Trembearth, while young talents like Jackson Martin, Muhammad Abdulrafay, and Simrth Gill are poised to step up. Fletcher aims to create a competitive spirit and growth mindset, with senior players such as captain Liam Molloy, Nick McGuane, and Connor Poulton leading the way.

Essendon kicks off the season against reigning premiers Carlton in a one-day match at Princes Park.
